Hadrian's Arch, Jerash
The western pylon of Hadrian's Arch is viewed here from the north. Most notable, and perplexing, are the inverted acanthus capitals on the base of the engaged columns seen here. This magnificent gateway was built to commemorate the Emperor's visit in 129 AD, which ushered in a Golden Age of prosperity for the city of ancient Gerasa.
