Cardo, Jerash

Cardo, Jerash

The Roman genius for organization is typified in their uniform city layouts. The main street of any Roman city is the Cardo, intersected at right angles by one or more Decumani. Shown here is a section of the Cardo of Jerash, looking west, between the Oval Plaza to the South and the Macellum to the north.
The Cardo, Jerash's "Main Street," is lined by Corinthian columns. Shops and temples abut the street on either side; the most important are marked by taller columns, as seen here.
