Oval Plaza, Jerash
The plaza is ringed by Ionic columns. Streets leading out from the plaza were architecturally marked by a wider space between the columns, and a higher lintel, as seen here. Visible on some of the column sections are ancones, small protruding bosses that – in this case – were probably used to attach metal plaques, bearing donor inscriptions, to the columns.
